Course Overview

Purpose

This course provides a complete, operational introduction to well integrity — how barriers are defined, validated, monitored and managed throughout the life of the well. Learners develop the competence to recognise integrity risks, interpret annulus pressure behaviour, diagnose barrier failures, and make informed decisions during drilling, completion, production, intervention and P&A operations.

Built around real UKCS operational scenarios, NSTA and HSE expectations, and modern completion and intervention demands, it provides the foundation required for safe, compliant and effective well operations. It is designed for early-career and intermediate engineers who require a strong operational foundation in well integrity principles.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

Describe the purpose and principles of well integrity within the UKCS regulatory environment
Identify primary and secondary barriers and explain how they are verified and validated
Interpret annulus pressure behaviour and diagnose SCP, tubing leaks, packer leaks, microannulus and barrier failures
Apply MAASP, MAWOP and MINAP concepts to operational decision-making
Recognise common barrier failure modes and early warning indicators
Understand NSTA and HSE expectations for barrier management, reporting and compliance
Use barrier diagrams and integrity records to support safe operations and handovers
Apply barrier-based thinking to interventions, workovers and daily operational decisions

Course Modules

Delivered through 6 focused modules in a single day. Each combines technical input, operational examples, failure cases and knowledge checks.

  1. Introduction to Well Integrity & UKCS Regulatory Context
  2. Barrier Fundamentals
  3. Annulus Monitoring & Pressure Management
  4. Integrity Risks & Failure Modes
  5. Regulatory Reporting, Assurance & Compliance
  6. Operational Decision-Making & Barrier Thinking

Who It Is For

  • Drilling engineers and wellsite supervisors involved in well construction
  • Completions engineers planning barrier installation and validation
  • Production and well integrity engineers responsible for annulus monitoring and barrier management
  • Intervention and workover personnel involved in barrier verification and diagnostics
  • HSE, assurance and regulatory teams
  • Early-career engineers seeking a structured introduction to well integrity

Assessment & Certification

Learners complete knowledge checks after each module to reinforce learning, followed by a final assessment demonstrating understanding of the core concepts. Successful participants receive an Aberdeen Technical Training Certificate in Well Integrity: Barriers, Monitoring & UKCS Regulatory Expectations.

Progression Pathway

This course forms the foundation for the 3-Day Intermediate Well Integrity Programme, where delegates build hands-on competence in barrier assurance, annulus pressure diagnostics, integrity testing and interpretation, regulatory decision-making, WONS quality review, and operational risk management using real UKCS case studies.
